If you've ever heard someone talking about a jon boat and wondered what they were going on about, this is the guide for you. A jon boat--not "John"--is an extremely versatile fishing boat that will elevate your time on the water. Dunfords of Havelock wants any time you spend on the lake or river to be the most fun and hassle-free experience it can be, which is why we carry and recommend jon boats to nearly every customer, especially if you're an angler. Best ways to Equip your Jon for Fishing

Jon Boats are made primarily for pure utility. With outstanding shallow water characteristics, these boats make an ideal tender or cargo carrier without any modification, but there are a few ways that you can outfit your boat for fishing or hunting. For fishing it's a simple matter to add some rod holders, a cooler, and a set of swivel chairs for more comfort and some extra utility, however may Jon boats do come equipped with spacious storage for your rods and tackle.

What type of Hull is Best for You?

Not all Jon boats are created equal, in fact, you can find Jon boats with three different types of hull that each offer different performance advantages. Most Jon boats are known for the simple flat bottom design that allows them to excel in exceptionally flat and shallow water, but these flat bottom Jons are far less capable in choppy waters.

If you're going to be riding on a river or lake that's prone to slightly rougher water, a modified V-hull boat will provide the combination of low water performance and wave slicing versatility that you'll need to stay safe on the water. If you are planning on getting into higher waters, then the shallow sides of a Jon boat may simply not be enough to keep you safe and comfortable, if this is the case look at getting a larger, Deep V hull boat.

Why pick a Jon Boat?

So what are the big advantages of a Jon boat anyway? First off: Price. Jon boats are easily the most affordable type of boat if you just want to get out on the lake and drop a line, so anglers of all experience levels are able to enjoy a day on the water. A second advantage: Weight. These boats are exceptionally light, especially aluminum hulled Jon boats, so you'll have no problem towing them to your favorite fishing spot. Finally, Jon boats are made for exceptional shallow water performance, so if you've got your Jon equipped with the proper outboard you can run in 6" of water with ease.

You can easily add rod holders, a cooler, and even swivel chairs to upgrade your comfort for your next fishing trip, or adding additional holders and gear so you can bring more friends along with you. The hull of a jon boat is fairly flat making it ideal for shallow water but the light weight and price range more than makes up for the limitations in hull shape. If you're going to be doing any regular fishing, Dunfords of Havelock definitely recommends looking into a jon boat. If you've got more questions, or just want more information, stop by in person.
