What is a Waverunner/PWC?

A personal watercraft, or PWC, is a vehicle meant to be used on bodies of water. It is typically sized to fit one driver and no passengers, though some vehicles are large enough to fit extra riders.

PWCs use inboard jet drives as their primary source of propulsion, allowing them to glide comfortably through the water. Unlike other water-based vehicles in which the driver and passengers rest inside the vehicle, PWCs allow the driver to sit, stand or kneel – whatever they prefer.

Most brands that make PWCs have a special name for these vehicles. Yamaha calls its PWCs ‘Waverunners.’

Yamaha’s Three Vehicle Types

Yamaha has a varied lineup of Waverunners – and if you’re not already familiar with the specifics of these vehicles, you might not know which vehicle is right for you.

In total, Waverunners are sold under three categories:

  • The EX Series

  • The VX Series

  • The FX Series

Read below to learn more about these vehicles, and find out which is right for your riding style.

The EX Series

You'll be blown away by your powerful riding experience on the water with Yamaha's EX™ Series personal watercrafts. The EX™ is swift, playful, and tons of fun with a seriously powerful engine at an affordable price.

This series of PWCs is built to be more durable than any other competing PWC in the rec-lite segment to ensure you'll get years of fun out of your EX™. You won't find another model in the rec-lite class that offers a marine-grade fiberglass hull plus a deck that delivers the toughest construction and absolute confidence in ownership.

You get more than 5 decades of experience in the marine industry when you go with the Yamaha EX™ Series. The TR-1 engine boasts a design that is both compact and full of power, delivering a superior power-to-weight ratio without sacrificing the reliability that Yamaha is legendary for. With the EX™ Series PWCs, you get all these features in an entry-level PWC at a price that you can’t beat.

VX Series

With the VX series, you get a perfect combination of performance, technology, and features when you go with the Yamaha VX Series of PWCs!

No Wake Mode™, Cruise Assist, a hull designed for 1-up thrill or 3-up stability, and the award-winning TR-1 Output engine are just some of the incredible features you will experience when you go with the Yamaha VX Series.

On top of all of this, you'll also get Yamaha's RiDE™ technology, which offers the world's first dual throttle handlebar controls for the simplest handling and steering. This technology delivers precise control no matter the speed, with no manual shifting and no gears, creating a more intuitive and exciting driving experience. You can take on tight turns around docks and trailers no matter your skill level thanks to the patented reverse bucket design that provides maximum turning thrust.

The Yamaha VX Series can serve as a great entry-level PWC for those who are new to watersports or can deliver everything you love about riding the waves if you're a seasoned PWC rider.

With Yamaha's emphasis on innovation, reliability, and fuel efficiency, you'll spend less time gassing up and scheduling maintenance trips and more time out on the water doing what you love!

FX Series

With Yamaha's FX Series, you get the SVHO® engine, the top choice for racing, and now your top choice for zipping around the lake. This engine gives you more torque, more displacement, and more power than any other WaveRunner® engine you've encountered before.

With the revolutionary RiDE™ dual handlebar throttle controls comes the most intuitive ride with better handling and steering for the smoothest operation available! The Yamaha hulls and decks are the lightest in their class without sacrificing the legendary strength and durability that has been a part of the Yamaha marine experience for fifty years thanks to the NanoXcel® 2 glass microbubbles that are smaller and stronger than filler materials used by competing manufacturers.

Passengers will ride in comfort with the Cruiser® seating while the two of you can keep all your valuables dry and secure in the two dry storage compartments with plenty of room for beverages. Important dashboard functions will be extremely easy to access with the Command Link instrumentation while the Cruise Assist and No Wake Mode™ make setting and holding the correct speed a total breeze. You won’t find innovative designs and thrilling riding experiences at such an affordable price as the Yamaha FX series.
