What You Need To Know About Side-by-Sides
Whether you like off-road recreational riding with your friends and family or you have a professional business to run that requires you to have a rugged vehicle to assist you with hauling and towing, a side-by-side—or utility terrain vehicle (UTV)—is the perfect answer. Side-by-sides are convenient, compact and capable of handling pretty much anything you throw at them. As your Ontario powersports dealer, Dunfords of Havelock has all the information you need to make an informed purchasing decision.
What Exactly is a Side-by-Side?
We’ll begin by identifying what a side-by-side is, since there are a few different types of powersports vehicles on the market and it can be easy to be confused if you don’t know what you’re looking for. A side-by-side is about a third of the size of a passenger car, with four all-terrain tires and a high-ground clearance. It’s gas-powered and has bench- or bucket-style seats in rows of two, with models capable of seating up to six passengers side-by-side (hence the name).
Similarly to your average car or truck, your side-by-side is operated using brake and gas pedals and a steering wheel, and there are seatbelts for safety. But instead of a full metal enclosure, a side-by-side is generally open to the air, with maybe a canvas top and half-doors for some security and protection from the elements.
Safety Precautions
Due to the lack of an enclosure, practicing good safety is important when operating or riding as a passenger in a side-by-side. Everyone should wear a well-fitting motocross or motorcycle helmet with eye protection in the form of a facemask or goggles. Long sleeves, pants, ankle boots with good tread and riding gloves with good grip are recommended to protect your skin from sun, rain, wind and abrasions from branches or debris. Riding sober is always the smart choice, as is riding in reasonably good weather and during daylight hours.
Uses
Side-by-sides are used variously for off-road recreational riding on trails or through muddy areas and fields or over sand dunes. But they’re also great utility vehicles with high hauling and towing capacities and cargo boxes for storing tools and other equipment. You can use them on construction sites, in forestry or mining, as landscaping vehicles and even on college campuses for janitorial work. The versatility of side-by-sides is one of their major selling points!
