Yamaha Powersports History
The Yamaha Motor Company, the American branch of the Japanese corporation, has been producing fast, reliable powersports machines for the United States and Canadian markets since 1955. Early Days
While the greater Yamaha Corporation has been around since the late 1800s manufacturing musical instruments, its younger American counterpart has only been around since the 1950s. After the devastation wrought by World War II forced many Japanese companies to diversify their offerings, company president Genichi Kawakami decided to expand his operations to make small engines for motorcycles.
This soon led to the spinning off of the Yamaha Motor Company, which released its first two-stroke motorcycle in the late 1950s for the American market. They released four-stroke engines starting in 1968 and continued to further cultivate their designs over the ensuing decades.
1980s Expansion
Both all-terrain vehicles and personal watercraft were developed during the 1970s and became hugely popular during the 1980s. The Yamaha Motor Company elected to enter both of these markets, releasing their first WaveRunner® PWC in 1986 to wide acclaim. They also developed ATVs for recreational off-roading and UTVs to help with hard labor. This expansion helped Yamaha to cement itself in the powersports market as a leading manufacturer of vehicles designed for outdoor enthusiasts everywhere.
Into The Present Day
Having found great success in a number of different markets, the Yamaha Motor Company is known the world over for the reliability, speed, and efficiency of their many vehicle types.
